story

fusus has elevated the blending of genres and disciplines to an art form. Armed with an impressive collection of drums, pianos, synths, percussion and samples, these multi-instrumentalists craft their own sonic universe. The outcome is a cinematic fusion of (neo)classical, electronic and jazz, balancing rhythmic energy with moments of introspection.

The Dutch duo stands out for their eccentric and artistic shows. With unconventional audience arrangements, experimental lighting design, and special sound techniques, these multi-instrumentalists create immersive live experiences.

Their latest live show – in here – proves it once again. A ‘living stage’ moves in sync with the emotion of the music. Meanwhile, a three-layered sound setup ranges from intimate listening moments to a captivating surround sound.

The eponymous debut album (May 2025) is an ode to serenity: a source of calmness amid ‘the storm.’ With driving electronic tracks of drums and synths, fusus builds tension, only to land in a warm core of tender piano pieces, cinematic strings and rich synths that come together like a grand choir. It serves as a reminder that, no matter how hectic or chaotic life may be, there is always a place of peace and warmth to fall back on.

The musical focus of Ruben Maathuis and Koen Vosmeijer moved along various styles over years. Still there’s one aspect that runs like a thread through fusus’ development: a special love for rhythm. Both musicians have played in a classical percussion ensemble since their childhood. fusus gained interest in electronic music through a collaboration with DJ/producer De Sluwe Vos (Vosmeijer’s brother). This introduction in various electronics genres inspired fusus to start their own mix of mechanical and organic sounds. Soon after, the first EPs In Manu [2016] and In Textus [2019] followed. They gained recognition for their innovative mix, winning awards at the Grote Prijs van Nederland

With the white-box show for In Textus, the duo took a new path of audiovisual experiences. The subsequent headphone concept IN U NI [2022-2023] further demonstrated that fusus is more than just a music-act. The duo created a multi-sensory experience with a wall of light, an in-the-round setup, and an intense sound experience through headphones and subs. The audience described it as a ‘musical detox’ and ‘re-grounding after a wild space.’ The show appeared at leading venues such as Paradiso Amsterdam, STRP Festival, and Grand Theatre Groningen.

collaboration
fusus’ instrumental sound also finds its way into collaborations. In 2024, the duo released the album Hymne, together with singer-pianist LAVALU. Earlier, the duo also created music for the poetic video Kikkervis by Ischa den Blanken.
